Upasani Baba, an avadhoot
Upasani Baba Maharaj

Avadhoot

A definition

A traditional Asian Indian term for one who has "shaken off" or "passed beyond" all worldly attachments and cares, including all motives of detachment (or conventional and other-worldly renunciation), all conventional notions of life and religion, and all seeking for "answers" or "solutions" in the form of conditional experience or conditional knowledge. As the Avataric Great Sage, Adi Da Samraj has pointed out, non-humans (such as plants and animals) are all avadhoots of a kind.

Pictured at left is Upasani Baba Maharaj (1870-1941), an Indian Spiritual Master known for his unpredictable behavior and disregard for convention, who had many of the characteristics of an avadhoot.
